About me

I graduated from Oxford in 2017 with an M.St in English, having completed my undergrad in 2016; since then I've worked for the Society for Education and Training, taught at a leading high school in New Zealand for a year, and continued freelance tutoring throughout.

I graduated from Oxford in 2017 with an M.St in English, having completed my undergrad in 2016; since then I've worked for the Society for Education and Training, taught at a leading high school in New Zealand for a year, and continued freelance tutoring throughout.

As a student, I was able to learn through enjoyable, intellectually rewarding 1-to-1 discussion – where I could work through my ideas and develop my thinking freely, without fear of being outright baffled by something. As a tutor, I try to create an easy-going, stimulating environment that encourages independence and originality of thought. I’m happy to be led by your interests and ideas, to help you flesh them out further and articulate them with greater clarity; I’m equally happy, if you’d prefer, to guide more decisively your approach to a text or topic.

I’d like to help you through your study of literature in any way I can – whether that’s by aiding your essay technique, developing more sophisticated theoretical approaches to texts, finding apposite points of comparison between texts, or working through your encounter with a difficult text for the first time.

About my sessions

My tuition is geared towards securing the results you want, but hopefully it does more than that. I'll help you to hone your faculties as a critical reader of poetry and fiction, as of philosophy and history; to develop strategies for noticing things – parallels and points of connection, inconsistencies in arguments – and to use what you notice in interesting ways. I'll help you to push your thinking further and express your ideas confidently...

I'll help you to push your thinking further and express your ideas confidently in writing: to find canny ways of shaping your points to strengthen and spice up your work.

We can also talk about why this stuff matters. Asking why something is worth reading in the first place, and sussing out precisely what’s at stake in reading it, will shine a path through to the big questions posed by a poem, play, or a work of philosophy. We’ll engage with such texts not just as cold, dissectible artefacts, but as experiences in reading, where our own confusions and uncertainties are recognised as valid within - maybe necessary for - the richness of those experiences. Having taught a range of ages and abilities, from pre-GCSE through to degree level, I recognise that certain texts and concepts are tougher to crack than others. That's what I’m here for! We can move at whatever pace you like through a topic until you feel confident with it.
