I also understand that struggling to get grades isn't just about the ability - exams are incredibly stressful and I know too well how strangely, when you're sitting in a silent room with a pen in hand and a blank sheet in front of you, everything can just escape from your head even though you've practised everything perfectly.

I really enjoy teaching about essay structure and writing style. There's a knack to it, but you'll find that once you've got it your ideas will seem much more coherent and examiners will want to give you the marks. I used to work in communications, so you won't find me using jargon for the sake of it. I'm all about creating concise, well-written work that conveys exactly what you want to say. Of course, you need to know appropriate literary terms, but that knowledge is actually secondary to understanding how language works and what it's actually saying.

About my sessions

Online lessons: This will usually be for comprehension of the text. So, just let me know what texts you're looking at so I have a chance to read them before we start. If you want to discuss how to answer an exam question, then if you could let me know which exam board you're with and which papers you're working on, that ensures that I can prepare properly.

Online lessons: This will usually be for comprehension of the text. So, just let me know what texts you're looking at so I have a chance to read them before we start. If you want to discuss how to answer an exam question, then if you could let me know which exam board you're with and which papers you're working on, that ensures that I can prepare properly.

Written sessions: This is ideal for coursework/practice essays. For this I don't need anything in advance (except for perhaps a link to a mark scheme), and I will provide a proofread, help you reference, comment on the finer points and also provide an overview of general stylistic points to bear in mind. One session is enough for a practice essay, but for coursework it will be more likely two to three sessions. This is because inevitably, the first draft needs a lot of work and it will take me a long time to go through it and look up sources. I try my best to be time efficient and I will never ask for more sessions in retrospect, even if it does take longer than originally anticipated. Please also note that marking is subjective and the mark I give is based on how well I feel the work meets the mark scheme.

Any other queries, please do feel free to drop me a line and we can discuss in a free online session.
