Currently I am studying for my PhD degree in Mathematics, more specific in Mathematical Analysis. I chose Analysis because it provides a multitude of options when it comes to solving problems. Throughout my degree, I demonstrated a powerful desire to understand and help people around me. The research path allowed me to interact with a variety of mentalities that developed my analytical skills, but also planning and processing project skills in a team-oriented environment. More specifically, working in the Pure Mathematics section implies an open mind attitude towards various knowledge and cultural backgrounds.

For the past four years, I have been working closely with the Undergraduate Office from Imperial College as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. I started this path with the interest of helping undergraduate students understand and discover what university mathematics has to offer. My approach towards this role involves a serious attitude towards the learning process intertwined with colloquial conversations with students. It is known that students perform better when the pressure of the invisible wall between the GTA and them is up to some extent removed. This can be done by either asking what questions they have, not resuming just to yes or no questions or forming smaller groups of students where they can discuss their problem points and share a GTA in the same time.

About my sessions

Mainly, I shall assess the level of each student by providing various initial tests that can reflect the knowledge in regards with the said topic. Following a discussion with the student and most likely the parents, extensive preparatory work before future sessions shall be implemented in such a manner that every step in providing a solution can be easily understood and thought upon. Moreover, students can be quite intimidated by maths sometimes hence a relaxed attitude towards their questions and showing that every problem should be approached by a step by step tactic, does indeed change their perspective.

Progress should be measured fortnightly by either using tests that summarise what has been done so far or quick quizzes after every session. These quizzes contain relevant material to the lesson learnt during that day and they can be scheduled after the session and before the next session, such that the student can check whether the material presented previously has been appropriately understood.

From my experience so far, to encourage learning Mathematics, there is a constant need of having a relaxed and positive view about various exercises or ideas. The problem is hard ? No worries, we shall split the said problem in more than one smaller problems that are easier to tackle with and then proceed. The smaller problems are hard as well ? Not to worry! We can split them into easier steps until everything is understood and used properly!
