About me

Hi! My name is Sebastian and I currently study German and Spanish (BA) at Christ Church, Oxford. Transferrable skills and employability are among the many reasons why people choose to study languages (be it at GCSE, A-Level or University), however, I have always found the very basic ability to express yourself in a foreign language, and thereby immerse yourself into another culture, the most motivating one.

Exam season is often a very stressful time of the year for students at any stage, however, my experience has taught me that simply refining exam technique can go a long way towards achieving the best results possible.

Outside of studying I enjoy sports, including athletics, climbing, Taekwondo, powerlifting and especially rugby, having played for both my local club and school. I also like to travel abroad and, as part of my undergraduate degree, am looking forward to spending 1 year in a German- and Spanish-speaking country. As a member of the Oxford Union I am also thoroughly interested in the many debates and talks held there.

About my sessions

Broadly speaking, I will teach the student how to think, not what to think. Developing one's own ideas and a personal understanding of study material will make studying more enjoyable and revision much easier - this is significantly more effective than spoonfeeding, as in an exam you must think on your feet.

Broadly speaking, I will teach the student how to think, not what to think. Developing one's own ideas and a personal understanding of study material will make studying more enjoyable and revision much easier - this is significantly more effective than spoonfeeding, as in an exam you must think on your feet.

Lessons will typically start with any questions the student has. The tutorial will then be dedicated to covering a particular aspect of the syllabus or refining exam/revision technique. Finally, I will send the student some short exercises for practice outside of lessons. This is nothing heavy, but very beneficial nonetheless for retaining the information covered.

I firmly believe that a well-developed understanding of vocabulary and grammar is essential at any level, as this gives you the confidence to master fundamental language skills. However, this doesn't have to be boring; Quizlet, for example, is a simple and interactive tool I use for this - a small amount every day is an easy way to get this done!

I can provide a special focus on any literature-based aspects of the course. Studying literature may seem daunting, however I have accumulated much experience through A-Level German and Spanish, Pre-U English Literature, and of course through currently studying German and Spanish literature at Oxford. Mind-maps are a great way to revise this aspect of the course!
