About me

I'm studying Classics course 1B, which includes Latin language at advanced level and Ancient Greek ab initio. Learning an ancient language from scratch at university has meant I have consolidated my knowledge of how languages work and the best way to learn a language quickly and thoroughly - a key skill when helping students before exams. I have a great passion for the Classical world which allows me to tutor with great enthusiasm. I aim to tailor each tutorial to the student's personal needs - preparing for examinations will be the overall focus; however, I believe it is very important to understand the wider context of the subject. Therefore, I like to encourage a greater knowledge of the historical, literary and philosophical contexts surrounding the ancient world, a skill which will be rewarded in examinations. It is through this that I continue to be enthusiastic about English and History - subjects which I continue to read around and enjoy. Similarly, constant visits to France and a love of its culture (often conversing with family members in French) enable me to assist also with French. Academically, full UMS marks in my AS Level French oral, English Literature GCSE and AS, A2 coursework, History A2 coursework and Oxford University classes in Latin and Greek enable me to tutor confidently and comfortably. Most importantly, I am very interested in these subjects and wish to use this to help others - making exams as stress-free as possible is vital!

About my sessions

I understand that everyone learns and works in different ways, thus it is important for me to structure tutorials by personalising it to the student's learning style. Working regularly in group projects and with a tutorial structure myself at university means that I have been exposed to many different methods of learning. The nature of languages means that vocabulary knowledge is constantly growing and requires consolidation, therefore I will always prepare thoroughly for each tutorial. I am very organised and always strive to perform to the best of my ability, so every effort will be made to help each student to achieve their own potential. I feel it is important to outline the areas of difficulty initially, so that we are able to work together to an end goal. The prescriptiveness of examination boards means that this is easy to monitor progress via examination guidelines and knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. The best way of tackling any issue is to work through slowly and calmly on small, specific areas. Before you know it, the bigger picture will feel much more manageable!

Alex the MOST WONDERFUL TUTOR that I have ever come crossed. I got my GCSE RESULTS 2 days ago and Latin is my best subject which I achieved a high nine. For the language paper, I got 87/100. For the literature prose paper, I got 48/50 and 43/50 for the literature verse paper. I honestly can’t thank Alex enough for her passionate, experienced and just incredible teaching. Latin was my worst subject back in year 9 and year 10 up to a point where my parents felt the need to find me a tutor outside school right before my year 10 end of year exams. Alex definitely helped me to reach my full potential throughout the past year of teaching. If we are having a language lesson, we will always translation a passage where we will do it sentence by sentence. Alex tend to let me translate as much as possible first , then she would point out my errors, make notes for me, Identify the language parts where I need to focus the most on and we would have regular vocabulary tests as well. Just one term, my Latin skills improved amazingly where I was predicted an 8/9 for my Latin GCSE and as a result, I did end up with a high 9 for my Latin GCSE. Moreover, Alex really is my inspiration and I look up to her so much. She helped me to choose my sixth form, gave me honest advices and most of all, lighted up my great love and interest for Latin. I am actually going to take Latin as one of my four A-levels and I could have never imagined myself choosing Latin back in year 10. To those students or parents who is looking for a Latin tutor out there, I would 100% recommend Alex!!!!

Alex is a very passionate teacher, she helped me go from a predicted B in Latin to achieving a very high A in the exam! She was motivational throughout and explained anything I didn’t understand very well, could not be more pleased with her teaching!
