About me

I am a PhD student at the University of St Andrews working in the field of nonlinear optics. In my undergraduate degree, I was awarded the court medal for academic excellence in the final three consecutive years. Upon graduating I also received a prize awarded to the best physics graduate along with a first class honours degree with distinction.

In my undergraduate degree, I was awarded the court medal for academic excellence in the final three consecutive years. Upon graduating I also received a prize awarded to the best physics graduate along with a first class honours degree with distinction.

With respect to teaching my philosophy is simple. I see more and more student who are taught to solve problems in a way that bypasses the true understanding of the nature of physics. For this reason, I like to approach teaching with a fundamental understanding being the primary of a lesson goal. If the student understands the physical nature of how a given system works then the solving of problems associated with it becomes a straightforward task and no problem will prove too difficult.

I also highly enourage students to ask as many questions as possible and to use to chat system on MyTutor out with sessions if any problems in understanding come up. There is no such thing as a silly question, only silly answers.

Like everyone, I am also learning as I do more sessions and feedback be it positive or negative is always welcome.

About my sessions

My plan is a very simple one. Find where the student is struggling by asking questions. This is by far the best way to gauge a student's understanding. Furthermore, it allows one to address gaps in their understanding which will inevitably bring concepts together into a more concrete picture.

I also like it when students ask questions about any problem they may be faced with and would encourage this as much as possible.

I want all of my sessions to be interactive with me and the student both trying to achieve the same goal. Namely, understanding of the material and being able to confidently answer any questions that may appear in an exam or test.
