About me

Hello, my name is Hollie and I study BA History at the University of Birmingham. What excites me most about studying history is how modern history in particular has such an influence on our contemporary society, often without us even noticing.

Hello, my name is Hollie and I study BA History at the University of Birmingham. What excites me most about studying history is how modern history in particular has such an influence on our contemporary society, often without us even noticing.

I left Sixth Form in 2018 and took three A-Levels in History, French and Religious Studies. Therefore, I have lots of experience in undertaking exams, and appreciate how stressful they can be. My priority as well as academic support is to familiarise and reassure students of the exam process of each subject in order to boost confidence, as this is something that really helped me both through my GCSE and A-Level exams. Applying to university in Sixth Form also seemed really daunting, but with good support and guidance I was able to confidently apply, securing an offer from all five of my UCAS choices and making an informed decision about studying at UoB.

At university, I am part of the history society which is really great for making friends and attending social events with those on my course. French is another interest that I pursue outside academic study, and I was lucky enough to be able to take on a module in French to continue my language skill. I’m not much of a sporty person, but I like to keep fit and healthy and try to go to the gym four or five times a week!

About my sessions

I will help my students improve by going through the topic step by step, breaking it down so it doesn’t seem so overwhelming, and making sure the student understands each and every part. I will help my students improve by going through the topic step by step, breaking it down so it doesn’t seem so overwhelming, and making sure the student understands each and every part. Moreover, in order to improve in exam situations, I will run through example exam questions and answers, and ask the student to reflect on this in their own time to work on in the next session. As testing is crucial for memorising, this will be my main go-to for recalling knowledge, and this will fuel the student with confidence when it comes to real life exam situations.

My lessons will be structured clearly, with an overview of the topic from me involving interactions with the student to hear their own ideas/gage an understanding of their level of knowledge on the subject. Then, most importantly I will look at some sample questions with them and see what their response is, assisting or answering questions when required.

With regards to learning techniques, I strongly believe that breaking a topic down bit by bit and summarising in your own words is a great way, as it helps students grasp an understanding from their point of view, whether this is written on a poster, detailed notes or a mind map. As well as this, examination and practice questions are absolutely essential to learn how to apply this knowledge. This is what I primarily used when I was revising for both my GCSEs and A-Levels.
