Hi! My name is Siobhan and I am studying MA Japanese and Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh. I have always been very passionate about languages and feel very lucky to be able to combine something I enjoy so much with my studies. Previously, I studied Mathematics and Statistics at the Universtity of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Since first applying to university I've had more than 8 unconditional offers from top universities all across Scotland! Currently, I am a member of the university karate and jiu jitsu teams, 'Familing' (the linguistics and English language society), and I am the treasurer for the Japanese Peer Support Society.

I just spent a year living in Tokyo, studying at one of the top universities in Japan to improve my language skills and get a deep understanding of the history and culture. I'm hoping to return to Japan from April 2020 to continue my studies.

I have many years experience tutoring throughout high school in maths, English, French and music, which gives me insight into what students need to help them understand anything they are struggling with. I have an outside-the-box approach, with clear and concise explanations split into manageable and understandable chunks.

About my sessions

I start my tutorials by working with the student to target the key areas which need to be looked at. From there, we will set out achievable and steady goals for the sessions before getting down to hard work. A series of small and achievable ongoing goals helps to boost confidence and can make an impossible goal seem a lot more manageable. I will have notes on hand about the subject area we are studying, and will explain it in an easy-to-understand way. Sometimes seeing is better than hearing,...

Sometimes seeing is better than hearing, so I have access to graphs, tables and a drawing tablet to help you get the most out of sessions.

A typical tutorial will consist of:

Answering any questions left over from our previous session

Setting a goal and outlining what we're going to be studying this session

Working hard to make sure everything we study together is solidified and understood well

Recapping and making sure everything is rounded out properly, double checking everything has been understood and is ingrained in the student's mind

Discussing where to go next, and deciding on our next session's area of work

If you would like to see an example lesson plan, just ask when booking a free video meeting and I can have a set of example lessons specific to your subject area.

I'm in my 2nd year of University and will be living in Japan for a year. I've seen so much progress in myself with just 5 lessons. I love working with Siobhan, she makes everything so easy to understand and is so much fun to work with! Would 100% recommend.
