About me

By trade I’m a Mathematician – it was my forte throughout both my school and undergraduate years. This love for maths stems from its intrinsic logic, and a belief that, with the right teacher and motivation, anyone can grasp what at first seem like unapproachable concepts. This belief helps me get the best out of my students – you just need to find an approach that works.

But maths isn’t my only speciality. I have achieved top grades for physics throughout my entire student life. Understanding and experimenting with the application of mathematical concepts to real-world problems really brings everything together – it’s during these kinds of problems that my students usually have their light-bulb moments.

To give you some idea of who I am personally: I have always had strong beliefs about sustainability, particularly renewable energy and its enormous potential for accelerated sustainable development. This is why a conversion to a more applied Masters programme (Humanitarian Engineering with Sustainability) was a common sense move. Outside of academia I tend to travel a lot, with a focus on climbing and nature. There’s not much better than reaching a peak (whether by walking or climbing) and taking in the surroundings. I have also done a lot of acting in the past, but this has unfortunately been put on the back-burner for now.

About my sessions

Before the sessions, I like to request a copy of your current syllabus, and what has already been covered in school. A list of all the topics with your current level of understanding will also be extremely helpful. This means that our tutoring can kick in immediately, and your session time isn’t wasted. Similarly, I ask that you keep me as updated as possible with your progress in school, so we can cement your knowledge and avoid unnecessary repetition.

One of the first things I like to do in our tutoring sessions, however, is discuss exactly how you like to learn and what makes it enjoyable for you. This could even be done in the preliminary meeting! We all know everyone learns differently, so establishing this information upfront is crucial to efficient and effective tutoring.

Due to the technical nature of maths and physics, most of the content will be delivered via the online whiteboard. I will upload pre-made material to the platform (i.e. graphs, pictures, figures, etc.) to supplement the learning experience – the majority of my students find that visualisation is extremely beneficial for successful learning (and of course this helps stimulate the mind and encourage participation!).

At the end of every session we have a five-minute recap, and if you’re up for a challenge, a quick-fire question round. This helps us both see where you’re at, and there’s no better way to revise than through practice.
