Degree: History and Philosophy (Bachelors) - Sheffield University
I am a dual honours student studying History and Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. I just completed my first year and achieved a high 2.1. I have two months experience as a volunteer classroom tutor in my first year. This involved several training sessions and then working as part of a small team to design and deliver sessions independently. In addition, I was trained as a tutor as part of “The Challenge”, in 2012.
I am particularly interested in working with bright students who struggle to structure their natural intelligence in a way that is adequately rewarded by, often confusing, essay mark schemes. I feel that having struggled with this myself I am ideally suited to helping younger students overcome these challenges. A crucial part of my job will be to help eliminate the “silly mistakes”, and help develop the skill of writing essays that can be easily recognised by examiners, who are often pressed for time, as deserving a high mark.
In general sessions will revolve around a concept, thinker or article. As preparation for the session, I might ask students to read a short extract or write an argument defending a position. The bulk of our time will be spent examining this in depth. This will help students build up contextual awareness and confidence which is crucial for subjects such as history and philosophy, where you are asked, in exams, to quickly build up arguments supported by precise and concise evidence.
