About me

Hello everybody! My name is Sumayyah and I am a medical student at the University of Birmingham. As a tutor, I hope to work in partnership with my students to reach or even exceed their goals. I work to understand what my students want from a session and tailor the lesson to how they work best so that they get the most out of it and most importantly, enjoy it.

I understand how difficult it is to apply to medical school- I know, I’ve been there! From teaching GCSE and A Level student’s skills for applying, I feel that I have gained the right skills for tutoring students. I found that patience, understanding and a bit of humour goes a long way. Furthermore, by being successful in my application process with the universities I applied for at the time, I feel that I have gained some tips that would be very useful to pass on to future applicants.

I hope to be the person you come to for advice, whether it be choosing medicine as a career, choosing a university, creating the personal statement that stands out, having a successful interview or even just help on the subjects you are studying at school- I’m here to help.

I look forward to meeting you all very soon!

AVAILABILITY: Weekday evenings and weekends

About my sessions

Personal statements: Most of my students have mainly required help on their personal statements. In the past, students have found it a better use of their time if I look at their personal statement drafts in my own time and then use the session to go through any recommendations. I mainly use the guidelines used by doctors today as a checklist to ensure students include attributes that medical schools are looking for.

Interviews: having gone through the panel interviews as well as multiple mini interviews (in University of Birmingham and a style that is being increasingly used by other schools) I have been able to use my past experiences and knowledge I have gained from attending courses to practice a wide variety of interview questions with students. Personally, I have not found it useful to memorise rules and tips to answer questions. I will aim to work from their interview answers as a baseline and help them improve their technique to ensure that that sell themselves, provide balanced answers as well as appearing confident.

Advice: It can be very daunting in making these career choices, such as location/competitive ration/lecture based vs PBL etc. Therefore, I hope to use my own experience to offer some advice

Sumayyah was extremely helpful in giving a lot of information on preparation for the medical school. I am very happy to get her help as a mentor for my daughter for her preparation. She is very sincere.
