Hi, my name is Emilia and I’m currently a Biochemistry student at the University of Birmingham. I have been tutoring since 2014 in English Language, Maths, Biology and Chemistry at GCSE and A-level. I also have extensive experience in helping pupils write UCAS personal statements, as a private tutor and as an online mentor working for my university.

I chose to study Biochemistry because I am passionate about science and believe that a good understanding of scientific concepts is essential for success at work and in everyday life. I am an editor for the science and technology section of my university newspaper and aim to improve public awareness of scientific knowledge and discoveries as part of my role. My ambition is to teach Biology and/or Chemistry at secondary school level so I can help to inspire a love of science in the next generation of students.

As a tutor, my ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand will ensure that students can develop a deeper understanding of their subject as opposed to merely memorising facts. My past tutoring experience means that I am familiar with the expectations of students in their exams and can aid in improving exam and revision techniques. I am friendly and outgoing and aim to make my lessons enjoyable as well as educational.

About my sessions

My tutorials will follow a three-step structure. I will begin the lesson by asking my student questions about the topic as to gauge their current level of understanding. I will then explain the topic whilst asking the student to suggest ideas before guiding them through a worked example. They would then attempt a question independently which we will discuss afterwards. At the end of the tutorial, I would ask my pupil to list three things they have learnt in the tutorial and an area in which t...

At the end of the tutorial, I would ask my pupil to list three things they have learnt in the tutorial and an area in which they think they have improved.

To encourage learning, it is important to create an environment where the pupil feels comfortable making mistakes and asking plenty of questions. My approach is to gently point out errors and guide them in the right direction, whilst also offering plenty of praise.

To ensure that pupils benefit as much as possible from my tutorials, I would ask them to set specific and tangible goals. For example, 'I want to get an A in my mock exam'. We would revisit these targets and assess the progress that is being made towards them as well as making any changes to improve the pupil's progress. I would also provide formal and informal testing to inform me of my pupil's achievement and help me to plan future tutorials.
