Hi! My name is Belen and I am a second-year undergraduate student of History of Art, English Literature and Russian at the University of Glasgow. I come from Italy but I am bilingual Italian and Spanish.

I have worked with children and teenagers at summer camps as language assistant. The languages with which I have worked were German and English for Italian students. This summer I have also worked as English language teacher at a summer camp in New Hampshire (USA) where I had the opportunity of teaching English to kids that were not native speakers.

I have studied several languages in secondary school such as German, French and Russian. This gives me the flexibility for analysing and understanding the difficulty that a foreign language can create. Languages are different from any other type of field of study and therefore have to be addressed in a different way.

I love everything that involves literature because I enjoy discovering always new ways in which a text can be interpreted. I am also passionate about art and the role that museums play nowadays.

I will help my students not only understanding the topic in which they are struggling with but also engaging with it perhaps in new ways they have not thought about. There are many different ways in which a question can be addressed and I want my students to be aware of all the possible answers and tricks to memorise key concepts of the relevant topic without feeling overwhelmed.

About my sessions

The structure of my lessons will be flexible conforming to the student I am working with. We are all different people and it is important to understand the method that works best for each of us, which is not always simple to find. I will help the student conform to a rhythm of study but at the same time adjusting new methods of comprehending a topic.

While the student explains the difficulties he/her is encountering in the subject, we will set some daily goals that will be reached by the end of the tutoring session. I think that dividing the problem and analysing part by part is the best way to understand a whole concept. I often use mind-maps to explain both definitions and links between different concepts.

I will especially help students by being a good listener and by explaining clearly and in simple but concise terms the topic. In the first lessons we will set the basics over which then more complex topics will be examined in the later sessions. I think that it is important to dedicate a part of the lesson to constant revision of key points and previous lessons in order to be able to connect all the partial knowledge acquired in the single lessons. Progress will be measured by following revision and answering 3 basic questions at the beginning of each lesson.

Belen helped me to improve a written piece of Spanish. She helped me in exactly the areas I asked and gave excellent feedback, all within a very fast response time.
