About me

I'm a first year History student at Durham who has lived all over, inlcuding London, Edinburgh, Yorkshire, and even Jakarta. I'm naturally curious about the world and love getting to know people and trying to help them in what ever way I can. I am mildly dyslexic (essay subjects not normally being to the go to for most!) and so I've learnt to play to my strengths - and how to deal with my weaknesses - giving me first hand experience in enabling others to do the same. My passion is history because of the ways it can teach us so much about the present. This has also allowed me to remain interested in all-sorts: from early medieval crusades to renaissance culture and all the way through to the revolutions of 1989. Having helped teach at primary schools and on holiday camps (as well as recently leaving school myself) I'm well aware that learning has to be entertaining for things to stick and so I hope to bring energy and a fresh perspective on areas which students want to improve in. With my skills covering the breadth of History, English, and Maths I want to show that a bit of hard work - and the right sort of work - can go along way across the board.

About my sessions

Private tutoring is about the individuals. And planning lessons should be as well. With clear aims at the start of each lesson, both myself and the student should know what we're trying to achieve - allowing both of us to prepare accordingly. This preparation can cover my focus on exam style questions and what they are looking for, to finding simple techniques to help remember things which have helped me and others. Once we know what suits the student best, the lesson should be a mixture...

Once we know what suits the student best, the lesson should be a mixture of getting the student's brains active and focusing on answers. Informal testing is ultimately the best way to measure progress, while setting managable targets - along with everyday enthusiasm - helps encourage learning. It is in our failures where we can learn the most and so targeted reflections are important in my lessons.
