About me

I'm a Prae Doc (Austrian name for a paid PhD student) at the University of Vienna. My research is in the Philosophy of Maths. I've got an MA in Logic & Philosophy of Maths from Bristol and a BA in Philosophy from York. I've been tutoring for over 2 years.

My tutoring ethos is that Philosophy is very often taught wrong at A-Level. Students are often just taught a long list of Philosophers and what they've said about various topics. They're taught that a good essay should read like encyclopedia entries. This is not the case (both in the A-Level mark scheme and at higher levels). When I teach philosophy I am to help my students develop the critical and analytical thinking skills that allow them to understand and critique the ideas they encounter. This both makes them a better Philosopher and develops transferable skills to their other disciplines.

In addition, I've also written a full revision guide for A-Level Philosophy which I make available to my students.

I’ve only been tutored very recently with Gareth and each lesson is intensely engaging. I would highly recommend him as lessons are methodical and always have a clear structure to them. Lesson content is always explained and taught in a concise direct way so it is very easy to follow.

Gareth has worked really well on last minute revision with my daughter, who tends to be quite anxious in the run up to exams. I would definitely use him again, and would recommend him to other parents.
