About me

Hi, I'm a third year medical student at the University of Birmingham.

Everyday I get to spend time on wards with patients and learning about their experiences and illnesses in a very interactive way, however, studying for exams is something I have accepted will be part of my life for the foreseeable future. I have revised for 12 GCSEs, 5Ass and 3A2s,and 2 years of preclinical medicine exams, so exam prep is something I have gotten very comfortable with.

At school I got a taste for tutoring in my role as a student mentor where as an A level student I mentored a GCSE student in Spanish. At University I have been part of a widening access scheme where I have provided mock interview practice to prospective medical students from less advantaged backgrounds.

One of the things that has helped me to succeed so far in medical school is having very active revision sessions; talking through topics with my friends I have found to be an amazing way to uncover bits of the subject that you thought you knew, but in reality, your understanding was a bit shaky.

I would love to have interactive revision sessions with students at GCSE and A level as I remember when I was doing them that it is quite helpful having input from someone who is closer to your level in education than the teacher as they can remember how they got to grips with that particular concept when they were in the student's shoes.

About my sessions

My session style is quite flexible and I am happy to adapt to the student if there is a particular method that they know works for them. My default session would take the form of asking the student which area they would like to look at before the tutorial and then I could work out a lesson plan from that. I think it would work best if we had a discussion at the start, where I could explain the major concept and check the students understanding and then for the majority of the session we could...

I think it would work best if we had a discussion at the start, where I could explain the major concept and check the students understanding and then for the majority of the session we could look at questions that practice questions for real exams questions and similar ones that I can write in the style of the papers.

I think the major thing about doing well in exams at school is getting to grips with what the examiners want to see in the student’s answers. In my sessions I would look at highlighting the buzzwords that would score higher marks in the exams.

In terms of measuring progress, I would suggest doing a 5-10 minute starter at the start of each session, where I could give the student a question from the topic we visited on the previous session to see whether they fully understood what we went through.

I think its important to realize that just because something seems really difficult at the time, with time things concepts do become more familiar and questions that seemed impossible are more feasible.

Michaela helped me with my Medicine application personal statement and had some great detailed advice of how to tailor my statement. She was straight to the point and good at making me aware of how to portray myself. Thank you for your help and time.
