About me

Hi, I’m Eleanor. I graduated from Durham with first class honours in Maths and Physics in 2018 and I loved it. So much so, I am now going into my second year of study for a PhD at Warwick University in particle physics. This year I'm based in Geneva working at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN!

I can totally understand how stressful exams can be; I still get extremely nervous before exams and have done since I started my GCSEs. However, I have learnt how to manage this and turn it into something positive to motivate me to work to do as well as I can each time. It has taken a few attempts to get it right and I’ve had advice from many different people, but it’s about finding what works best for you and I hope that I can offer some insight and ideas for that, as well as helping with the subject matter itself. Applying to university is also a very daunting prospect but a very exciting one! I decided to take a gap year before continuing my studies and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working full time, as it was very different to working academically and I then felt ready to get back into my studies. I also tutored maths and physics during this year and I really enjoyed helping my students study and prepare for their A-level and GCSE exams.

About my sessions

The most important thing about my sessions is that I want to help my students with whatever they are struggling with, and so I like to let them have a lot of input into how we structure the sessions. Everybody will have different areas that they struggle with so I think it is very important that each session is tailored specifically to each student. The most important thing about my sessions is that I want to help my students with whatever they are struggling with, and so I like to let them have a lot of input into how we structure the sessions. Everybody will have different areas that they struggle with so I think it is very important that each session is tailored specifically to each student. For every session, I will have one or two aims that we will be working towards and, depending on what works best for each student, a few different ways of approaching it. I like to use a lot of example questions, especially for maths, as I have found in the past that the best way to learn is to do questions. I also like my sessions to be as interactive as possible. One of the best ways to learn is to just ask questions and I am always happy to explain something in several different ways as often it just takes a new perspective in order to get a grasp on something. There are also so many different techniques for learning and revising and again, finding something that suits you is important, so during the sessions I am very happy to suggest different ideas to practice and also to try different things myself to make it easier for my students! I’m always learning as well and will take on board any advice, positive or negative, to improve my sessions and help my students as much as possible.

Eleanor is very good at explaining some of the more complicated A-Level topics in maths. My daughter has got on extremely well with her from their very first tutorial a few months ago, and has commented a few times that she wishes her teacher was as good!

Eleanor helped me achieve a level 8 in my maths GCSE when I was predicted a 7. Her hard work once a week significantly improved my maths and I really could not have got my grade without her. She also improved my confidence in myself and I am now carrying maths on to the 6th form!

She helps me to understand the topics very quickly and is really good at explaining concepts I don't understand.
