About me

Hello. I have recently completed my BA in Classics and English at Oriel College Oxford. I enjoy working with the syntax and grammar of languages and thinking about the reasons behind particular grammatical constructions and morphological forms, in Ancient Greek, Old English and Old Norse. I have done extensive work on the formation of "if clauses" and the Homeric poems. I enjoy working with the syntax and grammar of languages and thinking about the reasons behind particular grammatical constructions and morphological forms, in Ancient Greek, Old English and Old Norse. I have done extensive work on the formation of "if clauses" and the Homeric poems. I have lots of personal experience of how to prepare effectively for literature exam papers (including translation, close reading, and essay topics) and particularly on how to translate into Greek from English.

Outside of academic study, I relax by attending Zumba classes, walking and cycling. I also cross stitch and have recently learned to add beads to my designs. At university, I spend time playing board games with my friends.

I am happy to devise my own programmes of study to match a tutees particular needs or to follow school syllabuses. I have personal experience of doing the Gothic and Tragedy papers at A Level but am familiar with all the A Level texts through my work as an undergraduate. I let the student talk through their ideas out loud and when discussing literature challenge the student to think of new angles on a question and to argue against themselves. I also like to see a consolidation of what has been discussed more formally, either within or after the session if this is appropriate- a translation, mind map, essay plan or full written work. I would ideally begin a tutorial by asking some questions to establish progress on a particular topic, and from these questions establishing areas for focus. The sesssion would end with a consolidation of what has been covered and also a challenge to apply what has been covered in a new way, to ensure that the concept, not just its specific application has been understood.

In language learning I put a lot of store by memorising paradigms and vocabulary, and in literary study, I think having repeated immersion in the text studied is vital. This means targeted close reading of particular moments or chapters, and repeated rereading of the whole. An intimate knowledge of a text allows me to think on my feet and respond to questions on new and unexpected topics.
