About me

Hi, my name is Claudia and I am currently a third-year Psychology student at the University of Exeter. Having now experienced many years of examinations, I have developed successful techniques to reduce the pressure and anxiety they cause. I will guide you through the best revision techniques to suit you, boost your confidence in your own abilities and build on your knowledge. If there are any specific areas of your course or certain question-types you wish to improve on I will cater exactly for your needs.

My specialties are Psychology, History, and Biology for GCSE level and Psychology for A level. These are all subjects I enjoyed, and with both history and psychology being essay-based and through my continuation of Psychology at a degree level I have developed successful essay-writing skills as well as further expanding my knowledge of biology. By achieving full UMS points for my Psychology A level, I can promote a way of learning which really works.

If you would like to get in contact with me, please feel free to send me a message and we can organise a free meet the tutor session to discuss how I can best help you.

About my sessions

During my sessions, I will hone in on the specific knowledge areas of your choice, and focus on establishing a solid foundation of understanding before, building up to the higher level concepts you will be assessed on. I will teach you in the method which best suits you - through visual learning, asking you questions, helping you improve your own notes and finding the best ways to remember key information.

Once this overall knowledge has been gained, I will run through past paper questions to improve your approach to the different types of questions. As well as developing your skill in answering them under timed conditions. This will be altered to meet the specific requirements of your examination board.

After each session, I will ask my tutee to do some form of homework, be it revise the topic we covered in that session, prepare for the next topic we will cover, or do past paper questions which we will then mark together in our next session. I have found this method of teaching to be effective in my past students and am confident you will have the same results

Questions Claudia has answered

Describe ONE research method usas it is used in criminological psychology. In your answer you must refer to how the research method is used in criminological psychology. (4 marks - Edexcel)

In a laboratory experiment a participant will witness a controlled incident which is linked to a crime. This incident is artificially set up by the researcher in a laboratory setting. The witness may be showed an incident via video footage. The independent variable is something affecting the witness' recall such as a leading question. For example in Loftus and Palmer (1974) used the leading question ''About how fast were the cars going when they ***** eachother?''. The dependent variable is measured - for example the quality of the witnesses recall or in Loftus and Palmer (1974) they mesured the estimated speed of the car in the video before it crashed in mph. Within laboratory experiments all variables are controlled so that cause and effect conclusions can be gathered. In a laboratory experiment a participant will witness a controlled incident which is linked to a crime. Emily is 5 years old. Her mother has noticed she is acting in a more feminine way. Use Freuds's theory to explain how Emily developed her gender behaviour. (5 marks - Edexcel)

Freud's theory suggests the Electra Complex, which occurs during the Phallic Stage, is when girls discover they have alack of penis. During this time, the Emily's natural love for her father will unconsciously become erotic and envious and she will display penis envy. Emily will then begin to blame her mother as she thinks she is responsible for her castration. Later Emily will identify with her mother 'becoming her' and 'adopting' her feminine behaviour thus starting to learn feminine gender behaviour through becoming more like her mother in attempt to possess her father vicariously. In resolving her Electra Complex she has learnt more feminine behaviour due to imitating her mother's feminine behaviour.Freud's theory suggests the Electra Complex, which occurs during the Phallic Stage, is when girls discover they have alack of penis. Outline ONE strength and ONE weakness of the research method you described previously. (4 marks - Edexcel)

One strength of a laboratory experiment is they allow a high level of control over the procedure so all participants will witness the same standardised procedure. This means the procedure can be repeated on other witnesses and so can therefore be tested for reliabillity as all extraneous variables which could affect witnesses are controlled in laboratory experiments.A weakness of laboratory experiments are that they lack ecological validity and mundane realism compared to a real life witness situation. Therefore the behaviour of the witness may not mirror the behaviour of a real life witness as the incident witnessed is not natural as it was previously expected. One strength of a laboratory experiment is they allow a high level of control over the procedure so all participants will witness the same standardised procedure.
