About me

Hi I’m Lyam and I am currently studying medicine at the University of Manchester. I am extremely passionate about maths and science, this combined with wanting to find an occupation that helps people is why I chose to pursue medicine. Maths has always been my go to subject, I love the problem solving nature and how you work to one definitive correct answer. I have just had the opportunity to tutor my younger brother through his GCSE maths exams, he was the first year to sit the new curriculum. This is something that I find really rewarding and has allowed me to experience the changes to the syllabus first hand, something that will be really useful to my students. Of all the sciences biology has always been my favourite, finding out how everyday things that we take for granted work and understanding the science behind it fascinates me, and I hope that by helping others understand it will also fascinate them.

When it comes to exams like the majority of people I get stressed and nervous. However what really helped me was figuring out how I learned best, and applying this to my subjects. Going into an exam with a clear structure and plan really helped me deal with the stress and focus on the exam. Outside of my studies I am a keen sports player, especially hockey and football. Currently I am the captain of the Manchester Medics Hockey 1st team, meaning I get to organise and run training and matches, a responsibility which I find highly enjoyable.

About my sessions

Before a session I will chat to the student and find out which aspects they are confident with and which bits they are struggling with, so I can plan accordingly. The session will start with a range of questions related to that particular tutorial. I find this is a good way to get the student to think about the subject and gives me the opportunity to see first-hand where they are struggling. A lot of the time students are actually a lot better than they make out. The middle of the session will be spent going over the particular topic. Something that really helps me remember things is to explain them to other people, so I will get my students to talk me through concepts and teach me, if there are bits they are struggling with I can correct them and help find ways to remember it correctly. To end the session I will put what they have learned into practice with some more questions, some of these questions will be the ones they struggled with at the start. Seeing how far they have come in a session and now being able to answer a question they previously couldn’t does wonders for their confidence. Past Papers form a massive part of GCSE exams, getting used to the format and style of questions helps massively, as well many questions are repeated year on year so to have done them before is highly beneficial. Before ending the session, depending on the topic some homework will most likely be set, which I will have marked before the next session.
