About me

Hi there, I'm Joe. I graduated in 2019 after studying a degree that combined the 3 areas that always interested me the most when I was a kid: maths, science and languages. Everyone always said those 3 were a pretty weird combination but what I loved about all of them is you can break something that seems really complicated into a few basic rules and suddenly it all makes sense.

I always hated revising. Spending hour after hour with notes and textbooks, reading the same page 10 times before realising none of the information is going in and then getting frustrated because you've wasted the last 10 minutes and haven't learnt a thing. We've all been there. However the main thing I learnt at university was how to work smart; how to break up the mountains of content into key areas, focus on the fundamental points and work methodically through. That's also what I aim to do as a tutor; guide my students through what i know can be a daunting process so that it becomes fun and easy.

Personally, I'm definitely a people person. I like meeting new people and usually spend my weekends out somewhere with my

friends, either going for a meal or just relaxing. I like sports, especially football, and will happily spend a whole session discussing the finer points of Liverpool's season if that's what you're into. I also like travelling and exploring new places.

About my sessions

I think the key to studying any of the subjects I tutor is to focus on getting a deep understanding of the basics. This is key to the structure of my lessons, which is usually something like this:

1)     Isolate what we’re focusing on. The focus of the lesson may often come from me choosing something I think is especially important to the subject we’re studying. However, even better is when a student comes to the lesson with a particular subject area, or even just a par...

However, even better is when a student comes to the lesson with a particular subject area, or even just a particular style of exam question, which they have been struggling with. I encourage my students to be open about any area which they are finding tricky, no matter how silly it might seem.

2)     I’ll show you how. I’ll use my own examples, designed to highlight the most important points, and walk you through them at your own pace.

3)     Your turn. The most important bit. You’ll have a go at a variety of questions which introduce the same core concepts, but in new and different ways. Introducing the concepts in different ways is so important because a) it will really test your understanding and weed out any flaws b) once you’ve seen an idea presented 10 different ways you’ll be ready for anything an exam can throw at you.
