About me

I am a 1st year accounting and finance undergraduate at the University of Exeter. I have always had some enthusiasm for mathematics. My proficiency in the subject is highlighted in my attaining an A* grade in GCSE, and an A grade in A-levels. I have worked as a peer mentor to younger students whilst I was in sixth form, and also coached my little sister in her 11+ exams. In both cases, one truth remains constant, and it is that most students find maths very enjoyable, once they gain a clear grasp of it. For this reason, I find it so fulfilling when I successfully convey a concept to a student.

My past experience has taught me that students can easily disengage from a topic when they are being talked at. To prevent thus, I always encourage interaction with students whenever I can. I will try to embed some practice questions in my sessions. I will consistently ask students whether or not they understand a certain topic, and encourage them to feedback what they understood to me. I also find that rewards work particularly well, and so I would ensure that I reward students when I note some progress in their learning or understanding. Finally, encouragement is pivotal in my style of teaching. Having struggled with maths from an early age, I can empathise with students who find it difficult. For this reason, I am willing to look for solutions for each student I encounter, in developing a learning plan that suits them best.

Finally, I am an avid lover of performing acts, and my extensive involvement in the London Academy Of Music and Dramatic Arts, has developed my creativity. This is evident in my creative teaching format. Some of my methods of teaching include the use of: pictures, memory games and mnemonics. Past experience has taught me that the more unconventional patterns of teaching keep the subject refreshing, whilst also honing the student’s lateral thinking.
