About me

I'm a student at the University of Leeds currently studying English Language and Literature. Having recently passed my second year, I am about to embark on a Year in Industry that will see me take up internships with top theatre companies and charities. I'm a student at the University of Leeds currently studying English Language and Literature. Having recently passed my second year, I am about to embark on a Year in Industry that will see me take up internships with top theatre companies and charities. As part of my internships, my role will include reading and analysing brand new plays that are submitted to the company, a job I have been longing to take up since first studying for my English exams at secondary school.

My road to studying English at Leeds began with several inspirational teachers who tutored me through GCSEs and A Levels. Their love of the subject is what opened up the world of words to me and I am committed to sharing this fascination with others. Whilst I found my exams challenging, I believe that a genuine interest and love of the subject is what benefits a student and ultimately leads to success in exams. This, combined with a methodical and realistic approach to revision, is what lead to me gaining A*s for my English Literature and my English Language A Levels.

At university, I have transferred my skills in English to my extra-curricular activities. I have been the editor for the Arts section of The Gryphon student newspaper, writing and reading reviews, comment pieces and editorials as well as presenting several shows on Leeds Student Radio.

About my sessions

My teaching approach will be tailored for each student but will also follow several techniques that I believe are key to success in exams. I will initially gain an understanding of the level that the student is currently working at; this will be done through a series of simple questions that will allow me to assess the standard of written English. Using this information, I will thoroughly study the syllabus and any literature featured on it. Although different exam boards use different texts and methods of examination, the techniques required to pass their exams are very similar.

Once an understanding of the student’s level and relationship to the subject has been garnered, I will begin by using each session to focus on different questions within the exam. A student can expect to know exactly what the examiner is looking for in their answer and the specific techniques and tactics required to achieve the top marks. Any vocabulary, theories or contexts that are difficult for the student to understand will be studied in turn until the student can apply them expertly in a practice question.

I believe that a student is most likely to succeed in exams when they are capable of using the information and skills confidently, not simply regurgitating facts with no understanding of their actual meaning. This belief will be at the heart of my tuition with the aim of helping the student to fundamentally enjoy the subject.
