About me

I have been tutoring face-to-face for over a year now. I have tutored Maths, Biology, English and Physics (Maths most of all, as this is where demand seems to be highest). So far I have mostly tutored children doing Highers and National 5s (equivalent to AS and GCSEs).

I have a 2:1 degree in Maths and am about to finish a degree in English Literature. I got A grades in all of my A levels, which were: English Literature (studied with the AQA exam board), and Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (studied with the Cambridge International Examinations board).

When tutoring, I aim to challenge students to think for themselves as far as possible; I strongly believe that active participation makes for effective learning.

With science and maths, I aim to help students understand rather than memorise, because it makes learning much easier and infinitely more worthwhile. I aim to make it unnecessary to blindly follow rules that make no sense. Many of my students feel when they first come to me that they need to ignore their own common sense in order to solve maths and science problems, but I aim to teach them how to harness and draw on their common sense.

When teaching English, I aim to teach students how to create well-structured arguments based on texts, how to read for good comprehension, and to have confidence in asserting their own interpretations of texts.
