About me

It’s hard to tell you who I am and what I’ve done without coming off as a narcissist, so instead of listing my achievements and generic facts about myself, I’ll tell you what it is I do and why I do it.

I’m a third year law student at the University of Oxford analyzing how the political, social, and economic factors of society have shaped the English Common Law structure. I like structures and deconstructing them to discover the subtle but powerful meanings lost in the bigger picture. I love the power of language and how it can be manipulated to construe completely different interpretations which in turn leads to great debate as to what was the intended meaning.

In tutoring, I aspire to teach students more than just 'how to get the right answer'. Institutions such as the IB and A-Levels are starting to look and value more the investigative process (not only how the student reached the right answer but his consideration and explanation of why other answers were not suitable) rather than the quantitative result. Rather than teaching how to get a perfect score, I aim to teach my students the tools needed to think for themselves because it allows for them to come up with their own contributions to the questions they're being examined on, a factor which examiners reward greatly. It is also this very process which I have found is used and expected of students at Oxbridge-style universities.

About my sessions

I fundamentally believe in tutorials being student rather than teacher driven for it is mutually beneficial for both the student and tutor in getting the most out of each session. Before starting our sessions, I would ask the student what specific areas they would like to review in detail. From there, I would prepare each tutorial based on a different area they would like to review and would approach it using a 3-pronged style. I would first use a mini-presentation to give a brief overview of the material that is expected to be learned, after which I would use an example to show how examiners expect this material to be used, and then I would set out past paper questions that the student and I can do together. I feel this approach prevents the tutorial from being an information overload by not using the whole tutorial to go through powerpoints and reinforces the student to use the material learned to answer questions that would be expected of him to answer on an exam so that he understands what is expected of him to know using that information. After the session, I would ask the student, should he feel capable, to complete some homework based on the material learned today and in the first 15 minutes of the next session go over it with him and send back the corrected version. I feel this is important because it demonstrates how much the student has been able to take away from our sessions.
