About me

I'm a friendly student at the University of York, currently studying for a BA in History and Philosophy. Both of these are subjects I came to love as the result of outstanding teaching, and I want to pass on my love of these subjects to students - I intend to become a full-time teacher after leaving University.

Both of these are subjects I came to love as the result of outstanding teaching, and I want to pass on my love of these subjects to students - I intend to become a full-time teacher after leaving University.

Having fallen ill while preparing for my GCSEs, I understand what it's like to feel behind - or simply want to get ahead - in schoolwork. I had to bounce back from disappointing mock exam results, so I know how to balance my time, and I've had to develop strategies for dealing with a large workload, or revising a large amount of material across as short period of time. These experiences mean I understand what it's like to revise for public examinations under pressure, and that I'm able to come up with creative and workable methods for revising. They helped me understand that, if you feel behind, it's never too late to do something about it.

About my sessions

I will focus mainly on backing up factual revision with planning and writing exam questions - given students are asked to extrapolate and make arguments during humanities exams, rather than simply regurgitate a list of facts, it makes sense that practise questions should form the bulk of a student's revision. I will be able to use my own plans and essays from my A Levels to demonstrate what's good (and bad) about answers, and what examiners look for.

Factual revision is an important and essential foundation for success in exams, so I will generally begin a session with discussion of the fundamental concepts and facts at issue, before progressing to forming arguments and suggesting potential questions and answers. I hope to build up students' confidence through such methods, and this will, I believe, help them to do well in exams - in my experience, all students are capable of success; and a lack of confidence can be one of the greatest inhibitors to success. Fortunately, it's a problem that's fixable.
