I have been tutoring GCSE students since I was in my A levels and ran workshops and revision lectures for undergraduates since my second year of university. I am continuing my teaching during my PhD where I help student in problems classes. I also ran a course for final year masters students about my research area.

I aim to help my students develop the scientific way of thinking and way to approach questions. This is the most important skill to learn as it helps you deal with unseen questions and unfamiliar presentations of content that you know. Giving you the best chance to score high marks and generally feel happy with your abilities.

About my sessions

Tutoring is a very personal experience and no single approach works for everyone. So my approach will be tailored to the individual students. However, generally I like to build up from basics and try to find a common base of knowledge and use it to answer problems. As opposed to trying to remember every details of a course, I think being able to piece together information and attack the problem from the basics, naturally leads you to a better understanding. Obviously there is some information you have to just know, science is as much about observation of the world as it is about understanding it. To help students learn and remember I encourage them to talk about what we are doing as we go through questions examples. This helps me see if there are any small isues with their understanding and I can then help correct them before they cause problems further on.

My sessions are light hearted and homework usually comes in the form of watching specific science based youtube videos and sometimes reading really good website about specific topics which are confusing to most. However if the student would like extra questions of any level difficulty I can construct exercise sheets and solutions for them to try and present at the next tutorial.
