I am a first class honours student studying Music at the University of Leeds. I have loved music since the age of 5, and have taken part in many areas of it, such as analysis, history, performing and composition. I am in my final year at university studying music composition, music technology, musical analysis and writing a dissertation. My favourite part of my course at the moment is musical analysis and composition. Through understanding, difficult and confusing elements such as musical analysis can become really interesting.

Throughout university I have learnt a lot about the way to study. Especially with difficult subjects such as musical analysis, the importance of understanding it and appreciating it is overlooked. It can seem so daunting and stressful at first, but once you break it down and gain an understanding of each element, it pieces together wonderfully and becomes easy and fun! I want to take the stress out of this process, and allow you to appreciate it and enjoy it like I do now.

I am also a professional cellist, pianist and singer, and run a record label! I have taught many students before, such as teaching cello for 5 years to multiple young students. Whilst at school completing my GCSE and A Levels, I covered GCSE and lower level music classes whilst the teachers were unable to take the class. I have also conducted choir and orchestra sessions for students for many years.

About my sessions

To prepare for the lessons I will look at the students fallbacks, outlining where they are doing well, and where they need help. Instead of learning the answers, it is important that students understand what they are studying, starting with the basic elements and then progressing from there. To prepare for the lessons I will look at the students fallbacks, outlining where they are doing well, and where they need help. Instead of learning the answers, it is important that students understand what they are studying, starting with the basic elements and then progressing from there. It is common with students that the reason that they can't do it is because the teacher has skimmed over the basic elements, and so they lack those foundations within their studies, making it impossible to go further. Because of the prescriptive nature of music exams it is important to understand what the examiner is asking for, and to be able to fill that criteria completely. Looking at past papers, seeing the level that is expected of them and getting used to the style of questions is useful. Too often students run through past papers themselves and fail to address the questions that they do not understand, so do not improve to their potential. This is also a very important way of measuring students progress.

I believe that students really thrive from encouragement. With the overwhelming amount of information needed to be learnt for GCSE and A Levels, and the amount of pressure on students, so many students get overwhelmed and this clouds their ability to learn, understand and enjoy the subject. I will encourage students, and get them to understand the subject so that it doesn't seem overwhelming anymore, so they have confidence when faced with exams.
