I am a third year undergraduate in Physics and Philosophy at King’s College London. Physics and Philosophy? Why, yes! This combination strikes most people as very odd, but to me it seems quite natural: physics and philosophy both aim to understand the world and our place in it; they force us to think rigorously and mathematically about our most important and difficult questions.
I did not start out here: as a graduate of Norwegian high school, I first aimed for a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics degree at King’s, but before I got there I managed to secure a place at UC Berkeley - one of the best universities in the world. While there, I discovered my love for physics and philosophy through a range of wonderful classes with inspiring teachers - and decided to pursue them both back at King’s. I hope to similarly inspire my own students, because there is no more effective tool for success than a passion for learning - it has been the most important factor in my consistently high grades throughout my studies, across three different educational systems.

My sessions are dialogues: I ask questions, the student answers and explains; when the student gets stuck, we swap roles. In other words, I expect the student to put in a lot of effort - that is the only way to truly learn. I will not let them get away with the right answer only: I want to know why it is the right answer, and how they came to know it. I do this because I have come to see that the real problem is almost never right there on the surface, but rather it is lurking in some prior mistake that we need to carefully excavate and clear up.
I will call on my experience not just as a tutor, but also as a philosophy teacher and as a student myself - I have been through a range of different educational systems, and have learned a lot from them all. My students will learn to be better problem solvers, and they will take this with them throughout the rest of their studies.

We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the MyTutor team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 7 becomes a tutor on our site.
