About me

I am a motivated MA student from Northern Ireland. My undergraduate degree in English from Queens University developed my love of English, as I studied a diverse range of topics, from the portrayal of masculinity in Shakespearean drama to discourses of class in reality television. I graduated with First Class Honours in 2019. Textual analysis is arguably the most significant aspect of studying English. However, my favourite modules were the ones that examined both visual and written texts. My...

My current MA course in Media and Broadcast Production allows me to analyse media texts in light of issues such as representation and brand identities. This also enhances my skills as a media practitioner as I produce documentaries and radio packages about contemporary social issues. My course effectively informs my work, as outside of my studies I am a freelance journalist and on-air contributor to BBC Radio Ulster’s weekly music show. Throughout my undergraduate degree I was a Peer Mentor, providing academic support for students, and teaching essay-writing and referencing workshops on a regular basis. My experiences inspired me to begin tutoring outside of the university setting, and this summer I began teaching secondary school pupils face-to-face. In our media-dominated society, it is important to develop skills of critical thinking and analysis. Through tutoring, I aim to make Media Studies and English engaging and fun, and help educate the next generation of savvy students!

About my sessions

I begin my sessions by setting objectives. I ask students what they are currently working on in school and how I can help support them in their learning, and continue to make a list of goals for the session based on this. In my experience, the key to success when studying English and Media is having a thorough understanding of texts. I begin my sessions by setting objectives. I ask students what they are currently working on in school and how I can help support them in their learning, and continue to make a list of goals for the session based on this. In my experience, the key to success when studying English and Media is having a thorough understanding of texts. Many students feel that they do not "get" texts, and this is often due to a lack of engagement with the text. In my sessions I attempt to improve concentration, confidence and comprehension through shared reading (written texts) and watching (visual texts).I alternate chapters/stanzas with students and afterwards we discuss them, going over any areas of interest or areas for clarification. I encourage students to carry out independent research to help aid their understanding and build an awareness of cultural, historical and social context. Furthermore, in order to develop understanding of texts and their contexts, I make the most of multimedia resources such as videos. The online lesson space on MyTutor effectively facilitates this. In exam season I often deliver sessions centred around revision techniques (such as making character and theme mindmaps, chapter summaries and timelines, flashcards, completing practice questions) and essay writing skills, with emphasis on using discourse markers, structuring and planning essays and referencing. I measure progress through quizzes, monitoring performance in class and setting SMART targets.
