Who Am I?
My name is Amandine Riche and I'm a first-year English and Scottish Literature student at Edinburgh University. As you can probably tell by my name, I'm not fully English, I'm also half French but I spent my childhood in Madrid. For those reasons, I'm fluent in all three languages and comfortable tutoring them.
How Can I Help?
Since the age of 15 I have tutored younger children (aged 7-9 and 13-15) in either English or French. I graduated from the IB program last year, having taken English Literature Higher Level, French Language and Literature Standard Level and Spanish B. Both experiences are fresh in my mind and they are experiences I am eager to share. I truly enjoy helping someone develop their capabilities and watching them progress in a subject they may not be totally comfortable in.
How Would I Help Younger Students?
My approach to tutoring younger children is to keep it fun and interactive (after all, no one wants to learn a subject they don't enjoy). I like to use a mix of oral and written exercises as well as having some creative sessions that allow me to work on the student's confidence in the language as well as his/her creativity. I occasionally end the session with a little game, such as 'Who Am I?' in the language. This allows the teaching to end of a positive, fun note as well as develop and practise the student's vocabulary. I will often recommend books and films, being an avid reader myself, and because I feel one of the best ways to get comfortable with a language is to immerse yourself in it as much as possible.
How Would I Help An IB Student?
Firstly, being fresh out of the IB, I understand how daunting it is and I know that I little extra help can go a long way. I graduated the IB with a 7 in all three subjects I am tutoring and full marks on my IAs. Whether tutoring literature or a language, my approach remains a mixture of oral and written exercises. If tutoring English Literature, I would base my sessions around a particular text and work both on oral analysis and essay writing (such as writing a mock introduction etc.). If tutoring one of the two languages I would also have some text-based tutorials which would involve understanding the text, comprehension exercises, possibly a little creative writing, but I would also have oral exercises that would allow me to work on the student's confidence in the language, vocabulary and oral skills. In all cases, I would happily recommend books and films that the students may enjoy or find helpful. I would also be happy to help with Extended Essay work, should the EE be in one of the three subjects I offer or History (which I did my EE in).
If you wish to book an interview session with me or if you have any questions, feel free to send me a 'WebMail' or book a 'Meet the Tutor Session'.
I look forward to hearing from you! A bientôt! Hasta pronto!
