Hi! I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with a first class degree in French and Spanish, with a year of my degree spent as an exchange student at the University of Valencia.

I am passionate about ensuring that studying languages is an accessible and rewarding process that all students feel that they can relate to on a personal level. Therefore, I aim to instil a love of language learning in my students through a tutoring process which is unique to the tastes and learning styles of the individual.

I am a highly experienced tutor, with several years of experience working with students of all abilities: I spent my gap year working in comprehensive schools where I provided individual tuition to students following GCSE and A level courses in French and Spanish. More recently, I have been involved in a charity initiative in Cambridge which connects university students to local schools, both as a tutor and as Schools and Communities Officer for the whole scheme, where I was responsible for working with schools to design programmes which would benefit their students as much as possible.

Most importantly, I am very empathetic to the needs of my students. Having been a very shy and anxious student myself, I am particularly conscious of how daunting language exams (especially oral exams!) can seem to even the most able students and am keen to help students overcome any obstacles in order to achieve their potential.

About my sessions

My sessions will always set out to find a middle ground between the interests of the student and the requirements for the exam, as I have found this to be most effective way to maximise potential in the past.

I am all too aware that most learning resources are broad based and generic to the extent that, as far as the majority of learners (especially those that have to prepare for an exam in the subject) are concerned, they seem bland and alienating. One of the areas in which tutoring can be really beneficial in combatting this by emphasising the relevance of what we are learning to the student's own interests and shaping the material that needs to be learnt to fit the learning style of the student. In a similar vein, I am a firm advocate of supplementing materials created for the purpose of teaching an exam syllabus with "real" examples of the use of language (literature, television clips, magazine and news articles...).

The greatest obstacle which prevents most students from attaining their potential is their own confidence. My classes will work to tackle this in the most sensitive way possible: together we will work towards small goals to reassure and instil the student with confidence in their own capabilities. In developing strategies to tackle exam questions, it is my hope that they will feel comfortable enough to approach the exams with confidence in their ability to demonstrate their full potential to the examiner.
