About me

Hi I'm Lydia. I'm an enthusiastic and hard-working first class Economics and Geography graduate from the University of Exeter.

I am currently taking a gap year gaining some work experience and going travelling before beginning a job in September 2018. I loved both Economics and Geography at A level and as you can see from my degree, I just didn't want to leave either subject behind and so choose to continue them both at university level. For me, I find that both subjects are very relevant and very applicable and I think it really helps to study a subject that you can actually relate to and see in the real world. I've taken exams for the last seven years of my life and I think my exam technique and stress management definintely improved over the years. I have three younger siblings who are always trying to take advantage of my exam knowledge and advice!

Alongside my degree I was a member of the university athletics club (and then was Chair of the club in my final year) and tennis club, Raise and Give charity society and was also a peer mentor for younger students studying similar degrees to my own.

About my sessions

I will thoroughly prepare for all of my tutorial sessions in advance, ensuring that I have a good knowledge and understanding of the content and am teaching to the specific exam board specification. I will begin each tutorial by briefly covering the main points of the particular topic flagged by the student, answering any questions that the student may have before then beginning some theoretical or conceptual practice questions to develop the student’s understanding. Once I am sure the student has developed a good knowledge and understanding, I will practice and go through in detail an exam-style question. Further exam-style questions will be set for practice in-between tutorials, which I will then go through in the following tutorial in addition to addressing any concerns that the student may have had.

Questions Lydia has answered

Discuss advantages and disadvantages of soft engineering as a river flood management strategy.

Soft engineering encompasses techniques that involve working with, rather than controlling, the environment. Examples can include: forecasts, flood warning systems, land use management on floodplains, wetland/river bank conservation, and river restoration. It is considered a controversial strategy to dealing with river flood management as there are an array of both advantages and disadvantages.  Advantages of soft enginnering as a river flood management strategy include its low cost nature, compared with hard engineering strategies that often involve more building materials and time to put into place. This subsequently means that they can be used in LEDCs that may lack the finance to be spent on river flood management. Also, they are generally considered to be low maintenance strategies. For example, once you have restored the river, you only have to monitor it rather than continually upgrade structures (dams, levees etc as with hard engineering strategies). Additionally, soft engineering strategies are far more environmentally friendly than hard enginerring strategies as they encourage people to work with the environment rather than agaisnt it and are subsequently seen to be more sustainable. However, there are disadvantages to using soft engineering as a river flood management strategy. The techniques are not necessarily reliable and may not always be effective so meaning that some floods do still occur and consequently people may lose possessions and businesses may be adversely affected. Also, it has a limited use as soft engineering cannot always be used in areas where the floodplains are already built-up. Finally, soft engineering may actually increase local flood risk since they often do not attempt to prevent major flooding, but rather only to reduce the impact of flood events.  Soft engineering encompasses techniques that involve working with, rather than controlling, the environment.
