About me

Hi! I’m Rachel, and I'm in my final year of training to become a veterinary surgeon.

A bit about me: I love animals and have wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember. I also have a first class degree in Neuroscience from Kings College London. Science is my passion; I love examining why the world is the way it is, how things work and what we can do to fix them when they go wrong.

I believe that learning should be a rewarding and engaging experience, and not one that drains a student’s motivation and confidence. My approach to tutoring is very student directed and I aim to work with each individual to find the approach that best suits them. I appreciate that not every student will enjoy every subject, but I strive to teach in a way that enables you to see some real improvement, no matter what your past experience with a subject is, and that you will find truly engaging and rewarding.

Outside of uni, I’m a keen rock-climber and hiker and help to run the uni mountaineering society as treasurer/secretary. In my spare time I enjoy baking, singing (badly) and watching Rick and Morty on Netflix. I also help to run outreach for Trusty Paws, a student-led charity dedicated to providing veterinary care for homeless people’s pets.

About my sessions

In our initital free meet, we will start off by going through the syllabus and identifying the areas you are comfortable with, the ones that are iffy and the ones that are a complete mystery. I know that the curriculum may have changed slightly since I left school so will make sure I’m up to date on exactly what you need to know. We will discuss your preferred learning style and the techniques you use to study. I’d also like to get to know you a bit – your interests, how you feel about the su...

I’d also like to get to know you a bit – your interests, how you feel about the subject and your personal goals.

Before each session, we will identify a topic you want to focus on and set definitive goals, for example: ‘be able to explain the difference between a eukaryotic and a prokaryotic cell’. If you have a particular topic/exam you want help with, we’ll just focus on that. If appropriate, I’ll make some study materials beforehand for you to take away. We will start by going through the topic and explaining it in a way that makes sense to you and I’ll answer any specific questions you may have. We can then go through some study tasks and practice questions and at the end of the session we will go back to the goals and you can decide whether you feel they’ve been met. I will monitor your progress by tracking your answers to questions and discussions, and also by how confident you feel with each topic.

Rachel, has given my daughter Mia so much confidence with her maths and science and has tutored her in a way to suit her. I can’t recommend Rachel highly enough.

My daughter Mia who is not easily impressed, thought Rachel was a fab tutor and is actually looking forward to her Chemistry lesson! Mia found Rachel very easy to understand and we both think she will really benefit from the lessons she will be having with Rachel up until her exams in the summer. Thank you Rachel.

I am delighted to have found Rachel to help my son with topics he'd like a little more time on. She covers Maths and Science, so he now has the home learning 'go to' person that I am not! Rachel is helpful and keen to understand what needs to be covered before the lesson, so she can prepare. She has good worksheets if you want extra, but doesn't set homework as a matter of course. Rachel has a really nice manner and my son likes the way she explains things. He now understands topics he was finding hard. The acid test is that he is always keen to book another session - which is saying something for a 13 year old boy! His conclusion: "It's working well." I agree.
