About me

The best thing about my field of study is drawing on knowledge from all the subjects I studied at A-Level, from Economics, Maths, and even the Extended Project. The course is encouraging me to express points of view from many disciplines, keeping active all my learning to date, and showing me how to apply it in ever-better ways. This is a key part of the approach that I love to take in helping my students improve: not only helping them to gain a solid understanding of the theory, but of how to apply it, both to principles that they are aware of, and new circumstances that they might not immediately know how to approach; I have found that my degree has helped me to gain a great understanding of how to accomplish this.

As a secondary student, I was an engaged member of the community, running many activities to help younger get involved, learn new skills, and find new passions to take into later life. As a result, I have developed great enthusiasm for helping people to engage, even when reluctant: something I feel is key in helping my students learn; engaging with a subject, seeing how its various parts connect, is key to understanding how to apply relevant knowledge to create a complete, high-level response to most questions.

I hope to encourage a sense of passion in my students; to help develop the skills to create effective responses to problems, by drawing on my wide range of experience in learning and working with people.

About my sessions

The most important part of my tutorials is understanding where students need support; in narrow topic areas, or across whole fields. I will seek to gain an understanding of the student's strengths and weaknesses by discussing topic areas with them, exploring where they have come up against difficulty. I will then use a tiered approach to the tutorials.

The first tier is cultivating a sound understanding of the area’s theory, in academic knowledge or technique; in the second tier, I will encourage the student to apply this knowledge in a structured way, with the aid of mock questions and real-world examples.

The key to my tutorials will be in moving between these tiers. I have found that focusing on theory alone makes it much harder, retrospectively, to develop the skills to apply knowledge: as such, I will gradually introduce the second tier throughout the sessions, allowing a gradual development of applied skills without 'cliff-edges'.

A key part of measuring progress is reviewing written answers by the student, however I would emphasise that verbal discussion of progress against difficulties explored earlier in the process is as important in measuring progress and understanding: I am entirely against creating a culture of lectures and silent tests, and would seek one of trust and dialogue to keep up with how the student is progressing, to better encourage active engagement with my sessions.
