About me

I am a second-year student of Classics at Durham University. I have studied both Latin and Greek since I was 11 and fell in love with both languages from the moment I started, enjoying the challenges of learning something brand new. What I also particularly enjoyed was studying the links between the ancient world and today’s world – seeing how our culture has evolved from theirs. I have studied both Latin and Greek since I was 11 and fell in love with both languages from the moment I started, enjoying the challenges of learning something brand new. What I also particularly enjoyed was studying the links between the ancient world and today’s world – seeing how our culture has evolved from theirs. The analytical aspects of the languages coincided well with my other A-levels of Maths and Music, which also used the same problem solving methods.

I have always had a good work ethic as I like to achieve high grades. I like to put in the extra work as I do get nervous for my exams and therefore understand the need for good preparation.

Although at first my university application seemed daunting, I found it a very rewarding experience and less difficult than I previously thought. It was a confirmation to me that I was following the right path as I did not struggle to write about my love of Classics and why I wanted to study further in this field.

At university, I am part of a number of societies and am heavily involved within the theatrical world in which I can incorporate music and dance, both of which I have enjoyed from a young age. My hobbies have always given me a break from my studies in which I could fully relax and take my mind off my work, giving me a clear head for when I return to work.

About my sessions

I have often found that when I need extra help in an area of study it is not necessarily a lack of knowledge but a lack of confidence on my part. I found that having one to one sessions with a tutor allowed me to focus on specific areas which in turn boosted my knowledge and self-confidence.

As all pupils are individuals I would prepare tailor-made exercises for each student. I would structure my tutorials by preparing some questions in a number of different areas prior to the session....

As all pupils are individuals I would prepare tailor-made exercises for each student. I would structure my tutorials by preparing some questions in a number of different areas prior to the session. I would ask the tutee what they would like to cover as this would be most beneficial to them and then prepare some lesson plans.

I believe the best learning techniques are when the pupil has an active role in the session. What particularly worked for me would be for example, working through a question with the tutor then the tutee completes another similar question by themselves as in an exam situation. I also found that talking through the question I had completed was helpful as it made sure I knew why each step happened. Consolidation was key for my preparation as well – making sure that once I had learnt information that I had retained it long term

Hannah provided a well-paced and lively Latin session for Max. She was able to diagnose weaknesses and focus on the crucial areas in prep for an exam :) Thanks
