About me

Hello! My name is Ellie and I am in my third year at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, studying French and beginner's German. My course is challenging, but extremely rewarding, and encompasses a huge variety of different disciplines, from history and philosophy, to art and literature, from the medieval period right up to the modern day. At the moment I am particularly enjoying a module on contemporary french film, and a module on surrealist poetry. As I went through the trials and tribulations of school exams and university applications only too recently, I am well equipped to help, and have been tutoring younger students formally and informally for 8 years in school and at home. When I was a pupil, it normally took me a few tries to understand a concept, so I am a big believer in clear explanations and lots of examples worked through with a teacher or tutor, followed by frequent practice and feedback. Learning a language is not an easy task, especially when in large classes, as there are many different skills to acquire and maintain (speaking, listening, reading and writing), which are all equally as important. They are also, of course, the elements which are examined at GCSE and A-level, and I therefore think it is extremely important to develop strategies to tackle the problems faced by these different tasks, as well as making sure there is a firm grasp of grammar and vocabulary as a foundation for more nuanced learning.

About my sessions

I think it is important for a student to pair their own learning with what they are taught in a lesson or tutorial. I think it is important for a student to pair their own learning with what they are taught in a lesson or tutorial. Therefore, I will tell my student in advance what it is we will be focusing on during the tutorial (which of course can be requested by them, if they have material they are aware they struggle with) to give them the chance tor read a bit about it, to look at the grammar, or to look at some vocabulary if necessary. We will then discuss what the topic is, and where the difficult bits are, more generally, and for them personally. We can then work through some examples together, talking through how you would go about answering this particular type of question, what your thought process should be when you approach it, and develop some strategies for doing this efficiently during an exam. I will then give the student a couple of questions to answer alone, to ascertain whether they have grasped the information. If they answer these successfully, we can move on to a few harder examples, if not, we can return to the verb table / vocabulary list / grammar point, and do some more examples. We can then move on to practicing speaking and listening using this particular point or recognising it within a larger passage and knowing what it means. In the next tutorial, we will quickly go over what was covered in the previous one to make sure it has been well covered, and go through any work that the student has done before moving on.

Had tuition from the beginning of Y11. I started the year not even passing French and have just got my results today and got a 7/A in it. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without Eleanor. Lessons were always very useful and specific to what I needed to improve on. Would 100% recommend
