About me

Hi, my name's Sum-Ping and I'm a medical student at UCL! I've loved the sciences/Maths ever since I was a kid (thanks Mum for letting me watch so many episodes of The Magic School Bus!), and for me being able to help improve people's quality of life through my knowledge of the human body is something that I've always wanted to do. It is for this reason that I decided to study Medicine.

Taking exams at school and applying to university can be an intimidating experience. For me there were some instances where I genuinely thought I wouldn't be able to make it, and I am so grateful that I had amazing support from my family and teachers, who encouraged me and helped me through some difficult times. I've witnessed first hand the difference good academic and pastoral support can make, and I would love to pass this on to the next generation of students and help them achieve their full potential. What I found worked really well for me was active recall—covering up a page of a textbook, writing down what I could remember, and learning what I had missed out. This ensures that you are learning what you don’t know and I incorporate this frequently in my lessons with students both in real life and online.

In my spare time I am an avid musician--I play both the piano and the viola to a very high level. As a Near Peer Anatomy Tutor I am also very much involved in preclinical education.

About my sessions

I would start off the lesson by asking the student if they had any questions from school/their homework that they wanted to go over. I would then ask them if they had any specific topics they would like me to teach them. If not, I would mostly follow their school curriculum and go over what they had learnt in school that week. I would start off the lesson by asking the student if they had any questions from school/their homework that they wanted to go over. I would then ask them if they had any specific topics they would like me to teach them. If not, I would mostly follow their school curriculum and go over what they had learnt in school that week. To do this, I would incorporate a range of techniques, such as YouTube videos, creating my own questions and using question banks such as Physics and Maths Tutor. Throughout the lesson I would continuously check that the student understood my explanations, and ask them to explain concepts back to me in their own terms to ensure that they actually did understand the content of the lesson.

I think patience is very important when it comes to encouraging learning—when a student can tell that you’re frustrated it can make them anxious which makes it even more difficult for them to grasp difficult concepts. It is for this reason that I constantly check understanding throughout my lessons, and modify my explanations for each student—if the example I’m using is difficult for the student to understand, I will do my best to come up with another example to illustrate my point. I also believe that interactive lessons are more effective than just me talking at the student for an hour, so throughout my lessons I will constantly be asking questions and giving the student time to work out challenging concepts for themselves.
