About me

I am a Chemistry BSc (Hons) undergraduate student at the University of Manchester, I am undertaking an optional Mathematics module.
I achieved AAB in Chemistry, Maths and Physics respectively at college.

As I have a strong passion for all the Sciences I like to share this with others through tutoring; allowing me to convey challenging problems in a simple, exciting way. If a subject is enjoyed it is easier to excel in it as it is interesting and brings about a thirst for knowledge, this is why I bring 110% to every tutoring session.

I have tutored both GCSE and AS- level students during my time at college- all students were of different ability.
I tutored GCSE level students in Chemistry, Physics and Biology as part of my Duke of Edinburgh award for around 6 months.
As part of my role as a 'Not just for Boys' campaign ambassador for the Department for Work and Pensions I tutored AS-level students mainly in Chemistry and Maths. This lasted for approximately a year.

About my sessions

I will spend the first session figuring out the student's weaknesses and strengths to create a plan of study for our future lessons to achieve the optimum results.
If the student does not have any specific questions we will follow the study plan for most of the session, leaving time to tackle some high-end challenging problems to consolidate their knowledge at the end of the session.
Although I think this is the best way to learn, I am flexible in allowing the student to tailor the session in a style for their needs to achieve the best results.

Questions Aneliese has answered

Why does a sample containing compounds with chiral carbons have no effect on plane polarised light?

For a sample containing chiral carbons to have no effect on plane polarised light there must be an equal amount of each enantiomer in the sample. Enantiomers rotate plane polarised light by the same amount but in different directions - therefore if there is the same amount of each enantiomer in the sample (a racemate/ racemic mixture) the net rotation will be 0 as they will cancel eachother out.  A racemate is produced due to the planar carbonyl structure being susceptible to nucleophillic attack from both above and below- this creates an equal amount of each enantiomer.  For a sample containing chiral carbons to have no effect on plane polarised light there must be an equal amount of each enantiomer in the sample.
