About me

I am currently studying towards BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences, from the University of Exeter. I've always had a passion for science, yet I also have an array of interests in the geographic realm due to my heavy interests in nature.


I hope to be able to inspire others, and pass my knowledge on to others. I have had previous experience as a tutor, both as a Science Mentor at KEGS and as an independent tutor conducting 1-to-1 sessions.


I am determined and motivated, and this helps me to make lessons fun, engaging and informative.


Aside from academia, I love sports! I play netball, and have taken up a new Dutch sport called Korfball. Further, travelling is a huge passion of mine; I love seeing the world and experiencing new things. I am an Advanced Scuba diver, and love marine environments and wildlife, and try to keep on top of this passion as much as I can. I've recently just come back from a diving trip where I was able to dive with sharks!!


My lessons will be friendly, informative and hopefully very useful for your education. I can't wait to meet you and learn with you!

About my sessions

I will discuss your needs, timescales and what you aim to learn during each session. Therefore, the tutorials will be suited and tailored towards your needs and learning outcomes. I will research beforehand, and ensure that I will be able to explain any processes and answer any questions you may have. Preparation is key for success!


I will deliver the tutorial in a semi structured way, that is led by your questions and your ways of learning. I will include lots of diagrams to explain structures and functions and provide documents that have bullet pointed, broken down information. I hope to be able to cater for and deliver the information in a way that you understand.


I will also ask you questions to make sure you understand the process you have just learnt, and analyse your response to ensure you are well informed. I will assess your knowledge by linking different areas of the course together, to give a broad understanding of the subject. Further, I think being challenged will help you to progress, so when I feel you are ready, I will provide more challenging scenarios and push you to your best!


Encouragement, viewing progress and being on target for your goal will help to motivate you and help you to succeed. I am also not afraid to go back to basics and help to explain the foundations, to ensure you understand the more complex and difficult areas.

What is a cytoskeleton? What are its main components in animal cells?

A cytoskeleton is a structure that acts as a support for the cell. It also maintains the cell shape, holds and moves organelles.  It is made from a fibre network dispered in the cell cytoplasm, attached in the plasma membrane. The cytoskeleton has three components; microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments. Each of these components have sub-divisions and functions of their own. For example, microtubules are heavily invovled with mitosis and form the mitotic spindle fibre, used by eukaryotes to segregate chromosomes during cell division. What specialised structures do the lungs have to allow diffusion of gases?

The lungs are highly specialised. They have alveoli which are small air sacs. Alveoli give the lungs a big surface area, meaning that more oxygen can diffuse from the lungs into the blood stream, and more waste gases from the blood into the lungs. Further, they are moist, covered in surfactant which reduces surface tension throughout the lung. This prevents the alveoli collapsing, hence reducing gas exchange. Alveoli have thin walls which are one cell thick - this allows a small diffusion distance from the blood stream to the lungs. Surrounding the alveoli is a network of capillaries.
