About me

Hello, I'm Daniella and I'm a second year Biochemistry student at the University of Exeter. This is my second year teaching students on MyTutorWeb.

I believe that the key to remembering scientific facts is understanding the basis behind them. I hope my passion for science will come across to you, so that our sessions will be enjoyable and engaging as well as beneficial. Having already tutored primary school students, I am very patient and can use a variety of techniques to help ensure understanding and boost achievement. Last year I helped an A-level student go up two grades in her A-level, demonstrating I know how to get the best out of students. My sessions can comprise both of explanation and of answering questions together, ensuring that you are confident in your understanding. I have also recently completed my A-levels, so I have a good understanding of what students tend to find difficult, so I can tailor my tutoring to this. If you have any questions, please feel free to book a Meet the Tutor session and I will be happy to discuss your needs further.

How does light intensity control plant seed germination?

Plants contain a type of pigment called phytochrome, which are sensitive to light. Phytochrome exists in two forms: phytochrome red and phytochrome far-red. When sunlight (which contains red light) shines on the plant, phytochrome red is converted into phytochrome far-red. When a plant is in darkness, any phytochrome far-red present converts back to phytochrome red.

Dormant seeds will only germinate when there is plenty phytochrome far-red present, and no phytochrome red. This ensures it only germinates when there is high enough light intensity, so that there are suitable conditions present for the plant to photosynthesise and grow.
