Hi! My name is Sorcha Hannigan (pronounced Sor-Sha... it's Irish!) and I have a first class degree in English Literature and History from the University of Lancaster, and a distinction class Master's degree in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine from the University of Manchester, which was fully funded by the Wellcome Trust. I'm currently working as a Learning Support Assistant specialising in pupils with SEN in a High School in the North of England, with a view to starting my journey to becoming a History teacher in September 2020. I've been tutoring for over two years, and I recently won the category "best success story" in the 2019 MyTutor awards.

I studied English Literature, History and Biology at A Level, receiving particularly high marks in History (3 out of 4 exams received full marks). I hope this shows my passion for the subject, and I do hope to transfer this passion to anyone who needs help with any aspect of the study of Literature or History. I find the study of literature and history to nurture numerous useful skills, such as thinking critically and analytically, writing fluidly and coherently, expressing ideas with exceptional clarity, and also the very important ability to argue ones case with evidence to back it up.

In my spare time I ride horses, swim and play badminton. I also, probably predictably, spend an awful lot of my time reading!

Every student is different, has different ways of approaching problems and has different preferred methods of studying and therefore I believe approaching my tutorials with a blanket approach would not be helpful. Instead, I believe tutorials should be student-led, in the sense that it is entirely their decision what aspect we spend our time on, for example, structuring essay plans under exam conditions, analysing unseen poetry (literature), analysing primary sources (history), flash cards, practice essays, model answers etc.

I will encourage students to bring pieces of written work to the tutorial, be it a practice essay or the real thing, which we can look through together, identify the strengths and weaknesses, and then focus predominantly upon these. I will also endeavour to not only address areas which need improving, but also areas which the student is already competent/excelling at, and give advice on how to push their ability just that little bit higher.

Personally interviewed by MyTutor

We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the MyTutor team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 7 becomes a tutor on our site.
