About me

As an avid reader, I was fascinated to explore literature from a more in depth academic perspective in the classroom. The valuable connection between the artistry of Literature and the reality we live in is a concept that grounds my interest in studying, researching, and teaching English. This passion has led me through my A-Levels, my BA degree at Durham University and, most recently, a course in MA English Literary Studies at Exeter University.

Having such a strong commitment to English Literature and English language, I am by extension passionate about helping students to understand and enjoy English and to thrive in their studies.

Before working via MyTutor, I also tutored students in GCSE English via Durham University Student Volunteering. I have also worked as a 1:1 student support assistant and teaching assistant part time, so I have excellent experience working with a range of pupils and adapting to their specific needs and goals.

About my sessions

Before starting sessions I ask my students what they generally would like to work on, with an awareness that this may shift or become more specific as we dive into further tutorials. From here I will prepare suitable skill based exercises: this could be anything from textual analysis, understanding specific literary or language techniques, exam technique, or developing writing style.

I work closely, providing guidance that responds sensitively to each student’s range of ability and level of understanding. As a result of my careful consideration of each student's individuality, my tutoring style is adaptable, friendly and focused.

I aim to empower my students to find joy in developing academic skills, that will enable them to thrive and express their ideas effectively, within the framework of their English studies.

I measure progress through regular spoken and written tasks to test what has been learnt and how effectively knowledge and skills are being applied. I always include time at the start and end of tutorials for a period of reflection. Here, I discuss with my students which areas they feel more confident in, the areas they may be finding more difficult, as well as the skills that we will be focusing on during our lesson time and homework.
