About me

I study English Literature and German at The University of Manchester, and as I am a third-year language student, I am currently undertaking a year abroad. Until July 2018 I am living in Berlin, and working as an English teacher for German students- the youngest being just under 3 years old, and the oldest having left secondary school! I have a keen interest in history and politics, and the contextual political and historical landscapes from which literary texts are produced, is something that has interested me throughout my studies of literature, and I'm also a bit of a Shakespeare nerd! At University, I am a member of the German society where we regularly meet up for 'Stammtisch' evenings, as well as 'Kaffeklatsch' afternoons. I am also in the women's cricket and football teams, and I was the social secretary last year for cricket, and I also completed a formal cricket coaching qualification.

About my sessions

Teaching English as a foreign language in Germany has helped me to prepare structured lessons, that test and teach many different skills. I aim to help students through encouraging them to come up with answers and ideas themselves, which is a particularly useful skill to have mastered for exams. Having spent the last few years learning a foreign language, I am very aware of the challenges that students can face, and from my own experiences, I can help students to overcome these challenges. With the more essay based subjects, how an essay is written is often as important as what information the essay contains, so I intend to teach these skills, as well as the necessary content and vocabulary for the relevant subject and course. I will help students achieve their goals by having individual targets for each session, so that the overall goal can be reached over the course of the tutoring sessions. This helps to make big goals seem manageable by seperating them into smaller chunks. I intend to measure progress with small tests on a regular basis, and teach without fear of readjusting the aims so that the goals are ambitious, whilst remaining obtainable. I think enthusiasm for the subject really encourages learning, and I can certainly provide a lot of that!

Questions Chloe has answered

Which sentence contains the correct word order? A) Jeden Tag spiele ich Tischtennis mit meinen Geschwistern. B) Ich spiele Tischtennis zu Hause mit meinen Geschwistern jeden Tag. C) Jeden Tag ich spiele Tischtennis mit meinen Geschwistern.

A In German, the verb is always the second idea of a sentence. In the case of option A, 'Jeden Tag' is the first idea, therefore the verb, 'spiele' must come next, and it does. In option C, the verb is the third idea after the time and the subject of the activity, making this option incorrect.   In option B, the verb is in the correct place (it is the second idea after 'ich'), however it does not follow the rule of time, manner, place (TMP). This means that the 'time' component of the sentence, ie WHEN (jeden Tag) this person does something should come before the manner (mit meinen Geschwistern); and the place (zu Hause) comes at the end. Despite the verb being in the correct place, the rest of the word order is incorrect due to not following the TMP rule.A In German, the verb is always the second idea of a sentence.
