About me

I am studying Economics with Management at Durham University. Having done Maths, Further Maths, English Literature and French A-levels, I am passionate about both sciences and humanities and I think that this is the main reason for studying a social science, which helps me combine my interests. I have a two-year experience in tutoring students, ranging from year 4 to GCSE level and I have to admit that this is the most enjoyable part-time work that I have ever had! Solving algebraic equations, for instance; analysing Shakespeare or exploring the French culture, all these topics bring my passions together and being able to tell what I know to younger students is extremely satisfying. I love helping my students in not only improving their grades, but also in developing their knowledge for life. In English, I would bring in more poems to look at to broaden student’s perspective. In maths, I would bring extension questions as a stretch, so that the standard questions become the easy ones to solve. In French, I would advise on sources for further vocabulary and grammar practise, but also hint at the cinema and literature, which are a key part of the French culture. I have a lot of experience with children outside of tutoring as well, having done various voluntary works, including reading with children, as well coaching a range of sports. Moreover, I am also a baby-sitter of not only English, but also French children, which helps me develop my French whilst working.

About my sessions

I always start with a conversation about what students have covered in class recently, what they liked or found difficult perhaps. Then I would move on to homework and a starter. Then, the main part of the session would cover the topic that I want to look at with them. If it is comprehension in English, I would try to find some interesting extracts from popular novels to then go on to encourage my students to read them in their own time if they like the extract. If it is maths, I would cover a range of questions moving from easier to more difficult ones. Sometimes we would look at them together, but sometimes I would give them time to try and solve them on their own and then we would check them together. If French, then we might cover a reading extract, look at the grammar and pick out important vocabulary. If it concerns the A-level standard, I would look at extracts from films and novels. I would always finish off with time for any questions to make sure everything is understood. For me, being systematic is prime in achieving their goals. If I look at one topic, I know we need to go back to it a few times later on. I would regularly give them tests to complete in all subjects to see the progress made. Praise and motivation and key in encouraging learning. I always try to find a common interest that I share with my students. I encourage learning through personal research, whether it is creating equations, reading favourite novels or watching cartoons in French.
