About me

Hi I'm Niamh, I'm from the North West of England and I am currently in my first year at University College London studying an Integrated Masters (MSci) in Earth Sciences.

At A level I studied Chemistry, Maths and Geology- I have taken all of these subjects to degree level as I am studying 'Geochemistry' and 'Maths for Engineers' as optional modules this year. I hope to continue learning Maths and Chemistry modules at degree for the next four years.

I love Earth Science because it allows me to explore the more scientific side of Geology. I have always had a passion for Geology since the age of 10 - my interests starting with earthquakes and volcanoes. I think the really exciting thing is that I get to learn about the mechanisms behind this processes and I am able to look into the structures of the planet, from the circumference of the crust to the atomic scale in an atom of a mineral.

I have experience of tutoring at AS level for A level Chemistry. From this experience, I have gained a passion for furthering the learning of others, and one day I hope to become a University Professor or Lecturer.

I am a strong believer that "knowledge is power" and I want to be able to spread my own knowledge on to those who want to know more and better themselves. I will help my students improve by taking the foundations laid down by the class teacher and build on it to get the students to the level they want to be at.

About my sessions

Once areas of weakness have been identified for each of the students I will be tutoring, I will start by going over the basics (through exercise questions and detailed explanations) to establish the level of knowledge for the problem areas. From here, I will go through past exam questions with the student to show how they can apply their knowledge. For students looking to achieve the highest grades, I will take you through higher end questions for your specification.

I will set 1 page of questions each week on the topic discussed in the tutor session as homework. This will test what they have learnt in the session and whether their understanding of the topic has improved.

I will prepare for each tutor session by using generalise revision guides for A level and GCSE to go through the subject matter needing to be addressed. For each student, I will track their progress by ticking off criteria which is on the specification for the student's exam board.

I think that revision techniques are extremely important for encouraging independent learning. This is why, from February to May, I will be going through revision techniques with my students alongside specification knowledge they are struggling on. I will go through a technique each week and set the task of revising using this technique during the next week. In the session after, we will spend 5 minutes reviewing the technique to see if it was beneficial.
