About me

Hi, my name is Rachael and I currently study English Literature at the University of Exeter. Due to my love of thorough research, I have been credited with the nickname "Belt and Braces" whilst here. I am an avid believer in studying the wider social/political context of a given text in order to fully engage with it- be that from the study of contemporary music to the science of the time. I am not far shy of my 100th tutorial with Mytutor and feel that my extensive resource collection for both GCSE and A-Level English, allows me to make the lesson space a varied and engaging place to learn. I have worked as teaching assistant for two education centres in France during 2017, teaching in both French and English with first 10-15 year olds and later 16-23 year olds. This experience was invaluable in gaining classroom experience and how to create an engaging lesson plan. My own GCSE and A level exams weren't so long ago and so I understand the student's need for a creative teaching style that equally delivers a grounding in essay writing and/or exam technique. I'm a patient person who I hope can also be an empathetic tutor to your son/daughter as someone who initially found writing under time constraints very stressful.

About my sessions

I aim for a tutorial that balances a development of practical writing technique (and exam technique if applicable) with a more creative discussion of literary concepts, interpretation of themes and close language analysis.

I aim for a tutorial that balances a development of practical writing technique (and exam technique if applicable) with a more creative discussion of literary concepts, interpretation of themes and close language analysis.

Of course it's essential for me to get a feel for the personal objective of student/parent in these sessions in order to provide the appropriate content for the student. My teaching style is relaxed and friendly- I want the student to be comfortable expressing curiosity and asking any questions they have without feeling pressured.

Equally I value the use of set written tasks (narrative or essay focused) to gauge the student's level of progress as well as strengths and weaknesses. From there I can plan future sessions that focus on the skills needed to improve these areas.
