Hi! My name is Rob and I’m a third year medical student at the University of Oxford. Medicine is a fantastic subject to study at University as it is never boring, whether we are in the lecture theatre, dissection rooms or the research labs. As a Final Honour School student, I am currently specialising in Cardiac, Respiratory and Renal Biology while conducting a research project into early predictors of osteoarthritis and writing an extended essay on the similarities between depressive and anxiety disorders.

I have always liked to keep my areas of study broad, and as such I studied English Literature and History at A-level alongside Biology and Chemistry. I found in this way I was able to become better at thinking about problems in different ways and from different angles - with English and History both being subjects I continue to explore in my free time. Through my studies I have been able to hone my examination technique and explore interesting and engaging methods to keep revision and exam prep varied and effective.

In my spare time, I am a keen rugby player. I play 1st XV for my Oxford college, Christ Church, as well as 2nd XIII for Oxford University Rugby League. I am currently the President of the Christ Church Medical Society, through which we are able to arrange speakers to visit the college and talk on a variety of medical topics.

About my sessions

Being lucky enough to have access to the Oxford tutorial system, I am very aware that the best sessions with a tutor are not lectures, but rather a two way discussion between tutor and student. In this way, I take pride in ensuring that all my sessions are based around what the student feels that they need to cover, rather than subject matter predetermined by myself. Before beginning tutorials with a new student, I am eager to find out what exactly the student wants to understand better and how the students feels they learn best. Using this information I am able to prepare sessions that are engaging and interesting and, crucially, tailored to the individual student.

In terms of session structure, I find it useful to spend a few minutes at the beginning of each session covering any questions or concerns that may have come from the previous tutorial, before introducing the new subject matter. Here, we will discuss the basic concepts of the topic before applying this to an exam question format. In my opinion, it is important to build familiarity with exam question layout from the beginning as I have found this really helps to build confidence when it comes to tackling exam papers on the day. In the last few minutes of the session, I find it useful to recap what we have covered and make sure we are clear about what we are to cover in the next tutorial session.

Although he is a good teacher, his punctuality let him down.
