I had the privilege of attending King's College London Mathematics School, who consistently rank close to or at the very top for A Level results in the UK. My time there taught me an awful lot about how to effectively learn and teach mathematics and physics, through lessons I hope to emulate in my own tutorial sessions.

I'm a fairly easygoing, sociable guy. I'm active in a few societies, holding committee positions in two of them. I also have something of a creative streak, to complement my logical side, in playing/arranging/composing music for the piano, guitar and erhu (look up that last one if you don't know it, it sounds awesome!)

I truly don't think I can overstate my love of physics and maths, but I understand I'm in the minority on that. The subjects are notorious for being difficult and intimidating. That being said, I try my best to inspire something reminiscent of my love of the subjects in my students, and take pride in my ability to explain even the most challenging concepts in the simplest terms possible.

About my sessions

To key to learning effectively is active engagement. That's why most of my sessions begin with a brief introduction of the relevant concepts, followed swiftly by me going through some example questions, explaining my reasoning in as much detail as possible as I do. To key to learning effectively is active engagement. That's why most of my sessions begin with a brief introduction of the relevant concepts, followed swiftly by me going through some example questions, explaining my reasoning in as much detail as possible as I do. Then, once the student expresses some level of confidence, I encourage them to have a go at a few questions I have prepared, explaining their thought process to me as if they were the tutor. I do this in light of the overwhelming evidence that people learn well by teaching others.

I put a fairly large emphasis on understanding the fundamentals, as apposed to various "quick fixes"/"tricks" or rote memorization, for obvious reasons, the most important of which being that the students who understand the concepts more deeply are the one who end up performing better on exams.

There are no stupid questions in my sessions. In fact, I encourage the student to ask as many questions as they can. Not only are they just fun to answer, but asking questions helps with general comprehension and often the student will find that they come to the answer themselves purely by vocalizing what was in their head.

Absolutely brilliant teacher!!! Without him, I wouldn't have got an A* in Further Mathematics. I was struggling on my Statistics modules and Michael was able to quickly see what I was doing wrong and give me advice on how to structure my answers.
