About me

Hi, I'm Rachel! I'm a friendly third year medical student at Bristol University - I'm finding my degree fascinating in the more clinical years, and I'm hugely enjoying it. Throughout secondary school and sixth-form, Biology was my strongest subject, as well as the one I loved the most - I hope to pass this enthusiasm onto anyone I work with. Having achieved 10 A*s at GCSE and full UMS in one of my final A Level Biology exams (both AQA ), I'm in a strong position to help so...

Having achieved 10 A*s at GCSE and full UMS in one of my final A Level Biology exams (both AQA ), I'm in a strong position to help someone else maximise their potential. I have plenty of real world application knowledge of the course content surrounding human biology that makes it much easier to teach in an understandable way that the student can put into context.

I believe in tailored teaching to suit each pupil's strengths and weaknesses, as well as involving them in choosing learning strategies so they can use their knowledge of what works for them, plus my considerable tutoring experience, to help us try and get the best possible results together.

Communication is key in any teacher-student relationship, and my course has provided me with skills in this area that allows me to be patient and confidence-building, whilst also personable and empathetic. After 3 years of tutoring experience both online and in person, I have seen a wide range of students and have built up a valuable skill set to work in a unique way with each pupil that will see them get the best grades they can.

About my sessions

I firstly discuss with the student exactly what they want to get out of these sessions, whether it's help with homework, an improvement in exam technique or going over what they're learning in school. Together we then identify where any particular areas of difficulty lie, and come up with a detailed plan to address each one with a combination of discussion, past paper questions and visual resources like diagrams, videos and flashcards. Students often find it useful to create colourful and extensive mindmaps together that they can then take away and use as a revision resource in their own time.

This is all exactly tailored to the specification so we can be sure we're not leaving any gaps and are covering everything you could be faced with. Progress is generally measured through homework set at a pace the student is comfortable with, or if they preferred, periodical past papers. A good structure to the lessons is useful for us both, so often I like to prepare a timetable with pupils so we both know what we're covering and when, to help us keep on track and reach our goals.

My experience of tutoring exam boards is as follows:

GCSE - AQA, Edexcel, OCR A, CIE iGCSE, Edexcel iGCSE

A-Level - AQA, CIE, Edexcel and OCR A

I am currently going over biology A level and have found Rachel to be an amazing and lovely teacher, Rachel has fast replies and clear structured lessons. I don't feel like I am being overloaded with unnecessary information, she makes sure to stick to the specification and continuously checks to make sure I 100% understand what is being explained. Her lessons are exciting and interesting and they make me actually not dread learning biology.

Rachel planned the lesson in a clear and understandable format, she broke the topic down into sections which helped me get to grips with the information easily. She was encouraging at all times. I felt able to stop and ask questions if I needed to. Rachel was well prepared with work relevant to my exam board. I look forward to my next lesson with Rachel.
